About the SustEULaw Project

Project number 101047879  ERASMUS-JMO-2021-MODULE

Project name: Sustainability and Climate Change in EU Law

Project acronym: SustEULaw

The aim of this project is the creation of a specialised EU law teaching space within the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University of Cracow entitled "Sustainability and Climate Change in EU Law". The course, combined with other events such as conferences, promotional events and publications, will be taught in English and will be open to the Law Faculty Students, including Erasmus students. The project promotes dissemination of knowledge about two interrelated concepts highly relevant at the current stage of the development of the Union : sustainable development and climate change. As illustrated by the European Green Deal, sustainable development and the related regulatory framework aiming at achieving climate neutrality is crucial for the future of the Union. The main rationale of the course consists thus in a transversal analysis of a concept of sustainable development, including its constitutional framework, based on three pillars : economic, social and environmental, and its impact on the EU regulatory framework addressing climate change, including in a COVID-19 economic recovery context. Thus, both the course and surrounding events will focus on teaching and research in areas in which EU legal order needs to face a change and where sustainability and climate change become highly prominent such as environmental protection and climate legislation, including biodiversity and clean air, transport, decarbonisation; the role of taxation in a green transition; the concept of sustainable finance; sustainable agriculture and food law; consumer protection and new digital era of the Union; decarbonisation in the Union and energy in relation to State aid; green public procurement. Given the civic and democratic dimension of the climate change the project offers equally a discussion space about the climate change litigation and environmental democracy tools in the EU legal order and beyond.

Besides the regular course, the project fosters the academic dialogue through the yearly conferences "JMM Autumn Sustainability Event" followed by the post-conference publications in the Series of Krakow Jean Monnet Research Papers. The project includes creation of a dedicated internet website with teaching and research materials both open access and with restricted access for students.
